Every morning I wake up, stumble over to my computer and sit down to digest my daily feeds. This morning I found a fantastic video on John Bell’s blog that I just have to pass on. I laughed so hard it hurt… I laughed so hard because some of it is so true. Who doesn’t know at least one art director who wears all black?

“When I grow up I want to be a Web designer… a freak… use terms that nobody understands…”

HA. I remember seeing snippets of these running on TV — so hilarious. If there is one constant in the video from when I was little to now it would have to be … “and always pout when I don’t get my way” — it was true then and secretly true now.

I always reference the Washington Post commercial with the designer and his boss standing over his shoulder. Have not been able to find that on YouTube yet though. It’s so sad, because it’s exactly like my job.

Carly-
I actually sent the Washington Post an E-mail about that commercial and asked them to point me in the direction of where I could find it on the web. I never heard back. Maybe I sent the e-mail to the wrong person… maybe they are too busy writing about Nukes in Iran to care about the commercial with the shadow-poodle jumping through hoops. If I ever find it online, I vow to write a post about it!
It completely brings back memories of my old boss audio-mousing me… telling me to add more yellow stroke to that blue text. For real, I was told to put yellow stroke on blue text. I went home and cried that night.
http://www.army.mil/symbols/uniforms/ (only did the header treatment before I broke down so hard core they had to take the project away from me;-)

WOW. I’ve actually searched for that commercial too — it is hilarious! I will send an email over to the Post as well .. maybe enough people bugging them will get some reaction.

What about the web developer?! You know, the person that has to take web designers crazy ass, complex, drop shadows on texture backgrounds that need to repeat with out having a noticeable line, too wide for standard browser windows, none standard fonts on all content designs and turn it into a search engine friendly, fast downloading, working in all browsers (I see you gave on IE all together Sam… tisk, tisk, tisk), 508 compliant website that better not look any different then the approved by the client comp. Geez…

Geesh! YOU developers! ;-) Always getting angry over my IE situation. For the record: the site works in IE, I just choose not to support it. Some people need a kick in the ass to try new things, and I hope my website may be that little boost. I know you have to respect that.
I don’t understand the gradients & textured backgrounds thing though. I hear developers bitching about gradients all the time… its like three lines in the CSS! Thats why I learned CSS, so I can be like “now I KNOW you can do that, because I can do that”.
You guys do have my respect though…. After all those pages of HTML,CSS, Javascript includes (That Keith and Dan helped me write ), and accidentally overwriting files on the server…. I knew I was a Designer. Monster SHOULD write a section for “When I grow up I want to be a web developer…”

This is truly precious, Samantha-thanks for posting it!
Now I want to get a corner office, wear all black, and have no budget…

This takes me back… I recall when we saw this for the first time under the context of “When I grow up, I want to be a production artist, not even worth mentioning in a commercial satirizing the industry I so desperately want to be a part of!”
