Hi Samantha. Looks like a great overview of typography. Wish I could have witnessed it in person. Can you tell me what you mean on slide 84 when you say there is “no pricing” for @font-face? FontShop has released downloadable EOT/WOFF fonts that you can use via @font-face right now.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for that great question. When I included that in my slide it was to point out that when you are using a font service versus DIY @font-face you are paying for the benefits of the “service” (in addition to… in some cases the rental fee for using the font). When using a service like Typekit they are taking care of the font hosting and they are automatically detecting your user’s browser and serving up the corresponding font file type (.eot for ie, .otf for firefox etc..) In the case of an open source font a web savvy DIY web person may decide to host the font themselves, convert the various font files, and write the code that detects each user’s browser and then not have to pay any sort of additional fee.
Thank you for pointing that out and I will definitely clarify that in any future versions of this presentation I give.

Ok, just to be clear: Web FontFonts are indeed downloadable and hostable by the user. The license is a one-time fee. Typekit service is purely optional.

Listening to this podcast mad me soooooo jealous of not being there! Really, really great to hear someone so buzzed on web typography, it’s really spurred me on, AWESOME.
Wanted to pick your brain if I could Samantha, as I’ve been looking for a font that has some elegant, delicate, swirls in its arsenal. Similar to some of the swirls that you have on your site. Can you suggest a typeface?
Would really appreciate any suggestions that you might have. Keep up the great work ; )

Will,
I am glad you enjoyed the podcast, thanks for listening!
I would suggest you check out the Scripts section on Veer.
If you find a font you like and navigate to the “characters” tab you can often browse to see if the designer included extra glyphs.
I am a big fan of the work of Alejandro Paul, many of his scripts have really nice swashes and embellishments. I wrote a post about how much I love his scripts, you should check it out for ideas.
Thanks for your interest and good luck!

Thanks for posting those slides! Quite inspirational. =]

Good presentation overall, I really liked it… but!
Bunch of the examples you’ve used had really bad line spacing and kerning :(
— April 18, 2010
Hey Mariusz,
Thanks for the comment. I agree, the web still has a ways to go with spacing and kerning. Were there particular examples that you noticed?
