Anti-kitschites, every one of you! The least you could do is display some of my finer kitsch. That Conan one isn't aging as well as I'd like.

I agree with you.

I think a test of a great designer vs a talented one is their ability to discover client tastes and perceptions. Then adopt them in the design process and evolve them to suit the communication medium and message. Finally a great designer should use design techniques to extend and apply those styles for communicating fluently with the viewpoint of customer users.

Its refreshing to read a post that makes me think beyond my own ideas of whats good. It's all perception and taste at the end of the day and we often forget that.

(Just subscribed to you, btw.) I tend to catch myself in defensive mode, compiling a list of links and research that supports my argument... even before I make my pitch. Thanks for making me think, for making me take a breath.

Great post. The discussion between kitsch and camp and good design/art was one that I had all the time in college. I think it all comes down to that great idea that art is in the eye of the beholder. if your client loves it or wants it really corny, as long as it's well designed, it doesn't matter that they have pictures of their kitty all over the page i guess.
