I had a 2002 Jetta, Wolfsburg edition. The car had amazingly tight suspension and a turbo charger. There was nothing like pulling into an ice cream stand to see the heads turning to see the source of the tuned purr that the engine made.

I loved that little car, until... While leaving for vacation, the driver's side window fell into the door. Later, I took it in for brakes after only 30K mile, and was informed that the entire front linkage was worn out and needed to be replaced, for a mere $1,600.

We parted ways, my Jetta and me. But I still think back on it lovingly, and wanted it to be a better car than it was.

@Jason Beaird: I love that you have a story too! I still dream of a day where I can own a garage and keep a little 1968 red convertible punch buggy that only comes out for Sunday drives and holiday parades. One day!

Oh, that last sentence has no context. My first car was a yellow 1971 Super Beetle. My brother and I restored and and took it to car shows on the weekends. We sold it before I took off for college. It wasn't a practical car at all, but I still regret getting rid of that thing.

Great post. Amy and I are thinking about trading my old truck in for another "city car" and the Jetta SE was at the top of my list. Because of VW's history of fun branding, I really *want* to be a fan. Unfortunately, every person I've told that I'm considering the Jetta gives me similar VW horror stories. No amount of great branding will ever overcome bad customer testimonials and your post is just another reason I probably won't buy a new VDub. ...Doesn't mean I don't still miss my old punch buggy though.
